LVNL, The Netherlands
Evolving ATM with smart automation and an open platform
For over 90 years, Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland (LVNL) has been shaping the future of air traffic management, continuously adapting to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable operations. In an era of increasing air traffic and evolving operational demands, LVNL is taking bold steps toward digital transformation, integrating cutting-edge automation and open platform technologies to enhance scalability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Building an Advanced Automated Tower
A key milestone in this transformation is the replacement of paper flight strips with an advanced electronic flight data management system Frequentis smartSTRIPS. This marks the beginning of a multi-phase evolution designed to optimise tower operations at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The roadmap includes the deployment of Departure Manager (DMAN) for automated sequencing and an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) to enhance ground traffic efficiency. These automation capabilities form the foundation of an Advanced Automated Tower, where seamless digital workflows and intelligent decision support increase efficiency and reduce controller workload.
Embracing an Open Digital Platform for Tower Systems
As part of this modernisation, LVNL has implemented the Frequentis MosaiX digital platform, enabling seamless data exchange between tower applications. By shifting to a service-oriented, modular architecture, LVNL is increasing operational resilience, reducing hardware dependencies, and ensuring long-term flexibility. The transition to an Open Digital Platform - completed without disruption - has already strengthened interoperability and cybersecurity, supporting a future-ready tower environment. MosaiX currently underpins Electronic Flight Strips (EFSS) and will soon integrate ATIS, DMAN, and SMAN, optimising system performance while reducing power consumption through an efficient, cloud-capable infrastructure.
Pioneering the future of Air Traffic Control
The transformation at LVNL reflects a forward-thinking approach to automation, digital integration, and open platform architectures. With the Advanced Automated Tower concept enhancing operational efficiency and the Open Digital Platform enabling flexible, future-proof tower solutions, LVNL is setting new standards in air traffic management. With each milestone, LVNL is reinforcing its position as a leader in digital ATM evolution - leveraging the latest innovations to meet the demands of the future.
